Leviticus homosexuality
In the wake of the Orlando shooting, I sensed a need to help our congregation carefully and biblically about the intersection of the Bible, the teachings of Islam, and the LGBT community. Because the events in Orlando, along with the subsequent social commentary, brought these divided communities together and laid partial blame at the feet of Christians, our summer intern Timothy Cox and I drew up a biblical-theological response for our church. In the aftermath of the Orlando massacre, where 49 people were killed and over 50 injured at a gay night club, Christians weep for the loss of life and are left wondering what to say or do. On social media , trending topics have included gun control, terrorism, homophobia, and Islamic extremism. Now, more than ever, it is important we convey gospel-centered compassion, even as we hold firm to biblical truth. Read by itself, this passage may seem to catch Bible-believing Christians red-handed with a verse that proves their Bible needs to be updated or abandoned.

The Bible and homosexuality

Homosexuality, Leviticus, and Orlando - Southern Blog
No text has had a greater influence on attitudes toward gay people than the biblical book of Leviticus, which prohibits sex between men. Before Leviticus was composed, outright prohibitions against homosexual sex — whether between men or women — were practically unheard-of in the ancient world. Chapter 18 of Leviticus contains a list of forbidden incestuous acts, followed by prohibitions against sex with a menstruating woman, bestiality and various other sexual acts. Like many ancient texts, Leviticus was created gradually over a long period and includes the words of more than one writer. Many scholars believe that the section in which Leviticus 18 appears was added by a comparatively late editor, perhaps one who worked more than a century after the oldest material in the book was composed. An earlier edition of Leviticus, then, may have been silent on the matter of sex between men.

Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 – Laws about Homosexual Acts
There are a number of passages in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament that have been interpreted as involving same-sex sexual acts and desires. These interpretations form the basis of Jewish and Christian attitudes towards homosexuality. Chapters 18 and 20 of Leviticus form part of the Holiness code and list prohibited forms of intercourse , including the following verses:.

Leviticus 18 the eighteenth chapter of the Book of Leviticus deals with a number of sexual activities considered abominable , including incest , bestiality and "lying with a man as with a woman. It is part of the Holiness Code Leviticus 17—26 and its sexual prohibitions are largely paralleled by Leviticus 20 , except that chapter has more emphasis on punishment. The original text of Leviticus 18 , like that of most of the Hebrew Bible , is written in Hebrew. Since the addition of chapter divisions in the thirteenth century CE, this chapter is divided into 30 verses.
